Those of us who don’t work in the medical field never had to worry about how to properly wear a face mask. Well, not until now. However, in the era of the coronavirus, wearing a protective face mask is everyone’s new fashion accessory. Although it’s been nearly a year, some people don’t know how to wear them properly. So, we put together a mini guide for tips to getting a great fit. Here’s how to avoid common mishaps while stay as safe as possible when wearing a face mask.
The Correct Way To Wear A Face Mask
When worn properly, face masks not only protects you but also others from coronavirus. It must cover your face from the bridge of your nose to under your chin. This is proper whether wearing a cloth face mask or a disposable one.
While it can be slightly loose, it also needs to be secure enough to stay in place. Don’t be tempted to pull it out of place or touch it. Ensuring you wear a face mask that is comfortable and you talk eliminates this temptation. Otherwise, touching or removing it could put you at risk as well as limit its effectiveness. To get your ideal fit, follow the below steps on how to properly put a face mask on.
- Wash your hands thoroughly for at least 20 seconds.
- Check for defects in the mask such as missing ties, missing earloops or tears.
- Discard any that are defective.
Put On Your Mask Holding It By The Earloops
Position the colored or patterned side of the face cover outward, away from your face. If your covering has pleats, they should open downward.
If the face mask has:
- Earloops – Hold the mask by both earloops and place one loop over each ear.
- Ties – Hold the mask by the upper strings. Tie the upper strings in a secure bow near the crown of your head. Tie the bottom strings securely in a bow near the nape of your neck.
- Dual elastic bands – Pull the top band over your head and position it against the crown of your head. Pull the bottom band over your head and position it against the nape of your neck.
How To Wear A Mask With Eyeglasses
Wearing a face mask while wearing eyeglasses can cause your eyeglasses to fog up. This is because your breath flows upwards, but also due to other reasons such as the fit of your mask. So, ensure your face mask fits snugly to your face. Otherwise, the warm air will escape and fog your lenses. To prevent this from happening, pinch the top of your mask so that it fits the shape of your nose snugly.
But if you’re wearing an adjustable mask, you can tighten the sides for a more secure fit. Additionally, you can wipe your lenses with Zeiss Lens Wipes. These are pre-moistened wipes specially for eyeglass lens and do a fantastic job cleaning your lenses. There are also anti-fogging solutions to keep water droplets from building up.
Also, you can position your glasses more forward on your nose to prevent fogging your lenses. Doing this will allow more air to circulate.
Ever tried wearing your glasses over your mask? Ensure that your mask properly covers your mouth and nose. Then, pull your mask up and rest your glasses on top of it. This will stop air from escaping and fogging up your vision.
